The analysis of membranes in fuel cells is an important step for optimizing running conditions, e.g. in PEM fuel cells. Membranes in PEMs are often made from Nafion® which provides an ion exchange between the two half cells of the fuel cell. During operation structural change and degradation of the membrane change the properties of the whole cell.

Therefore, an analysis is necessary to provide information about these effects. A powerful method is the electron spin resonance spectroscopy.

The goal of this work is to get an insight into the mechanisms of degradation and finally to propose ideas for developing powerful materials for fuel cell membranes.
