High-voltage Lithium Manganese Spinel cathode material for Lithium-ion Batteries

One of the current focuses on the research of Lithium-ion batteries is to realize higher energy density and power density. Cathode materials with high potential for Lithium-ion batteries are therefore being developed. LiMn2O4 has a potential of 4.1V v.s. Li/Li+ and its potential can be further increased by substitution of Mn by other transition metal elements or addition of dopants towards 5V. The crystal structure of spinel may also be influenced by these modifications.

This PhD project aims at synthesis and characterization of substituted as well as doped LiMn2O4 with higher potential. The influence of compositional modifications on the microstructure, morphology as well as electrochemical performance will be investigated. The systematic study will finally contribute to the development of high-voltage cathode materials based on manganese spinel and other crystal structures.
